5 Tips that help you Stay Focused when Reading Books
Reading is an essential part of learning, and having good focus while doing so can make all the difference to a successful reading experience. Although distractions can often occur, there are some simple tips that you can follow to improve your focus when reading.
Before suggesting you some tips on how to focus on reading, I want to share my personal experience on my own reading journey.
Prior to college, I was never an avid reader, mainly because of my aversion to academic texts and the fact that English is not my native language.
However, I have been inspired by successful entrepreneurs and motivational speakers who encourage reading as part of their success stories. With this in mind, I decided to get into a habit of regular reading.
James Clear’s book Atomic Habits explains that for any habit to form, four criteria need to be in place: cue, cravings, response, and reward. Keeping this in mind, I have worked towards forming my reading habits by proactively focusing on these four points.
By setting specific cues – such as always keeping a book nearby – I am more likely to reach for it when I have some free time. Creating cravings by finding books that interest me makes the experience of reading enjoyable and gratifying, while actively responding to what I’ve read helps solidify my learning.
Now the question is why, did I share my personal experience with you?
The answer is simple, you are not alone who facing distraction while reading and it is completely normal.
Why people are unable to focus on Reading?
According to my experience, there are so many reasons which I may don’t know but according to my observation and personal experience people are unable to focus on reading because of
1. Lack of interest in the subject,
2. Language Barrier
2. Lack of focus power,
3. Lack of Reading Power
5. Make Reading Easy & Comfortable
Reasons for Distractions and How to Overcome?
1. lack of interest in the subject
Let’s start with the first one, most of the time people are unable to focus on reading because of a lack of interest in the subject. When someone finds a book interesting, it’s easy for him/her to read as compared to when he/she doesn’t find the book interesting.
The best way to overcome this problem is to try to find a book that is related to you or your field of work. For example, if someone loves cooking then he should find a book that is related to cooking because in this way he will be more interested and tend to focus on reading more.
2. Language Barrier
The language barrier is another problem that people face while reading, if the book is written in a language that is not their native language, it’s hard to understand the book and then focus on reading. This may also be due to a lack of understanding of certain words or phrases.
In such cases, it is always better to look up the meanings in a dictionary or search them online before proceeding with the reading.
I know this may be a time-consuming task for you, but trust me once you understand the language and words by practicing and reading more books then you will be able to read further books with ease and focus.
3. Lack of Focus Power
The era in which we live is full of entertainment, people are more focused on social media, video games, and other sources of entertainment rather than reading. The lack of focus power makes it hard for them to concentrate while reading so make sure to set a time limit for these activities and leave some time for reading as well.
If you are unable to focus just because of your inner thoughts, then try to practice mindfulness and meditation. This will help you build more focus power and eventually you’ll be able to concentrate while reading.
4. Lack of Reading Power
Different people have different powers, someone have got good listening power and some have good reading power. People who lack reading power find it hard to focus on reading, especially when they have got very good listening power.
To improve your reading power, you must start with small chunks of text and try to complete them in a short amount of time. Practice makes perfect, the more you practice the better you’ll be at it.
Another tip for you is you can listen to audiobooks, if you find yourself unable to focus on reading but have good listening power then this will be helpful for you.
5. Make Reading Easy & Comfortable
As I mentioned earlier to develop any habit, you have to make it easy and comfortable because as human being our minds always look for easy and comfortable activities, if the activity seems difficult or uncomfortable our minds will reject it.
This reason is alone enough to make reading difficult for most of us and most beginners underestimate it. To make reading comfortable try to sit on a comfortable reading chair with good posture and get some reading gadgets that will make your reading experience better.
A good reading lamp, book holder, and comfortable chair could make a huge difference in your reading experience and help you focus on the book.

This is especially important with academic or technical material that requires thorough understanding and memorization.
3) Improved Speed
Focusing also helps you read faster because your brain will not be distracted by extraneous information or thoughts. You’ll be able to stay on task and move quickly through the material without having to re-read sections or search for parts that you may have missed.
